- The mortar is an indirect fire weapon that rains freedom down from high angles onto an enemy within a (relatively) short range. But the compact and mobile mortar systems we have today are the result of a long history of indirect fire systems in the American military.
Initially, HX-305-M Angler is a patrol boat equipped with a machine gun. However, in war times it was intended to be used for tearing down defensive towers around platforms. After some consideration, engineers decided to sacrifice maneuverability for better firepower and mounted a STR-2 mortar on Angler. As the result, it became invaluable when besieging fortified platforms.
To start firing a mortar, the Angler needs to drop its speed up to a full stop. At this moment it becomes an easy target for enemy artillery.

Supplies usually required by the mortar platoon are ammunition, rations, petroleum, oil, lubricants, and repair parts. Such supplies are distributed to mortar platoons through field and combat trains. A mortar is usually a simple, lightweight, man-portable, muzzle-loaded weapon, consisting of a smooth-bore (although some models use a rifled barrel) metal tube fixed to a base plate (to spread out the recoil) with a lightweight bipod mount and a sight. They launch explosive shells (technically called bombs) in high-arcing ballistic trajectories.Mortars are typically used as indirect fire.
